Vitamin D Deficiency FAQ's

What is vitamin D deficiency?

Vitamin D deficiency occurs when vitamin D levels are too low to adequately support normal calcium balance and bone health. Certain nutritional, absorption, kidney and liver conditions can increase risk.
Vitamin D comes from diet, supplements, and sunlight; medical conditions can affect how well it is absorbed or used.

What symptoms can low vitamin D cause?

Many patients have no obvious symptoms. When deficiency is significant, some experience bone pain or muscle weakness, although these symptoms have other possible causes.

Symptoms alone cannot diagnose vitamin D deficiency.

Does everyone need a vitamin D blood test?

No. Routine screening is not recommended for every healthy adult. Your provider determines whether a 25-hydroxyvitamin D test is appropriate based on medical history and risk factors.

Blood testing is targeted to patients with a clinical indication rather than routinely performed for everyone.

How is vitamin D deficiency treated?

Treatment usually involves vitamin D supplementation at a dose appropriate for the degree of deficiency and the patient’s health history. Excessive vitamin D can be harmful, so high-dose treatment should be supervised.

Your provider reviews supplements and other medicines to avoid unnecessary or excessive dosing.

When will my level be checked again?

Follow-up depends on the reason for testing, degree of deficiency, treatment dose and clinical response. Your provider will explain whether repeat laboratory monitoring is needed.

Repeat testing is individualized rather than automatically required for all patients.
