Vaginal Infections FAQ's
What symptoms can vaginal infections cause?
Symptoms may include itching, burning, odor, pain with urination or intercourse, and a change in vaginal discharge. Some infections cause few or no symptoms.
Similar symptoms can have different causes and may require different treatment.
How can I tell yeast infection from bacterial vaginosis?
Yeast infection often causes itching and irritation, while bacterial vaginosis may cause a thin discharge and fishy odor. These patterns overlap, so symptoms alone are not always reliable.
Symptoms accompanied by fever or pelvic pain merit closer evaluation.
Can vaginal infections be diagnosed virtually?
Your provider can assess symptoms and risk factors, but vaginal swabs, urine tests or an in-person pelvic exam may be needed to confirm the cause and rule out STIs.
Your provider may recommend a vaginal swab or STI testing before selecting treatment.
What treatments are available?
Treatment depends on the infection and may include antifungal or antibiotic medication. Treating without identifying the cause can lead to persistent or recurrent symptoms.
Avoid self-treating repeated symptoms without evaluation because the cause may be different each time.
When should I seek in-person care?
Prompt assessment is important for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, pregnancy with concerning symptoms, sores, possible STI exposure, or recurrent symptoms that do not respond to treatment.
Pregnancy or recurrent infections may change the testing and follow-up plan.
