UTI FAQ's
What is a urinary tract infection?
A UTI develops when bacteria access your urinary tract and multiply. Most infections affect the bladder, although bacteria can sometimes travel upward and infect the kidneys.
Anyone can develop a UTI, but they occur more frequently in women because bacteria have a shorter distance to travel to reach the bladder. Sexual activity, menopause, urinary tract abnormalities, kidney stones, and difficulty emptying the bladder may increase your risk.
What symptoms can a UTI cause?
A bladder infection commonly causes:
- Burning or pain during urination
- A frequent need to urinate
- Sudden urinary urgency
- Passing small amounts of urine
- Lower abdominal or pelvic discomfort
- Cloudy, bloody, or strong-smelling urine
Urine odor or cloudiness alone doesn’t always indicate an infection. Dehydration, foods, medication, and other health conditions can also alter the appearance or smell of your urine.
How is a UTI diagnosed through telehealth?
Your NP Healthcare Group provider can assess many uncomplicated UTIs through a secure video appointment. They ask about your symptoms, medical history, current medications, allergies, and previous infections.
Typical urinary symptoms may provide enough information to begin treatment. However, some patients need urinalysis or urine culture to confirm infection, identify the bacteria, or help select an effective antibiotic.
What treatment might a UTI require?
Your NP Healthcare Group provider selects treatment based on factors that include your symptoms, allergies, medical history, and local prescribing guidance.
Bacterial UTIs usually require antibiotics. Take the entire prescribed course, even if you begin feeling better sooner. Drinking enough water may support recovery, while approved pain relief can reduce discomfort.
Your provider also explains what to do if your symptoms don’t improve or return after treatment.
When does a UTI require in-person care?
Fever, chills, pain in your back or side, nausea, and vomiting may indicate that an infection has reached your kidneys. Seek prompt in-person care because kidney infections can become serious without appropriate treatment.
You may also need testing or a closer assessment if you:
- Are pregnant
- Are male
- Have frequent UTIs
- Have kidney disease or urinary tract abnormalities
- Use a urinary catheter
- Have a weakened immune system
- Don’t improve after starting treatment
You should seek emergency care for severe pain, confusion, or signs of sepsis.
If you have painful urination, urgency, or other possible UTI symptoms, call NP Healthcare Group or book a same-day virtual appointment online for timely, compassionate care.
