Tinea Versicolor FAQ's

What is tinea versicolor?

Tinea versicolor is a superficial skin condition associated with an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast that naturally lives on the skin.

This common yeast-related condition causes areas of altered pigmentation, often on the trunk.

What does it look like?

Patches may be lighter, darker, pink or tan compared with surrounding skin, sometimes with fine scaling and mild itching.

Color changes may linger after the yeast is treated.

Is tinea versicolor contagious?

It is generally not considered contagious, because the yeast involved commonly lives on healthy skin.

A photograph can suggest the diagnosis, although testing may be needed if uncertain.

How is it treated?

Antifungal washes, shampoos or creams are commonly used. Oral medication is reserved for selected cases and requires clinical assessment.

Recurrence is common, especially in warm and humid conditions.

Why do spots remain after treatment?

Skin color may take weeks or months to even out after the yeast is controlled. Recurrence is common, especially in warm or humid conditions.

If lesions persist despite treatment, the diagnosis should be reconsidered.
