Hordeolum (Stye) FAQ's

What is a hordeolum?

A stye is an acute, often painful inflammation or infection of an eyelid gland. It may form near an eyelash or deeper inside the eyelid.

A stye usually occurs near the eyelash line or within an eyelid gland.

What symptoms are common?

Symptoms include a localized red, tender bump, eyelid swelling, soreness and sometimes tearing or crusting.

Increasing swelling, vision changes, or fever warrant prompt reassessment.

How do I treat a stye at home?

Use a clean warm compress for about 10–15 minutes several times a day. Avoid squeezing the bump, and temporarily avoid eye makeup and contact lenses.

Some cases require an eye examination to distinguish a stye from other eyelid problems.

Do I need an antibiotic?

Many styes resolve without antibiotics. Your provider will assess whether an antibiotic is appropriate; oral antibiotics or a procedure are not routine for an uncomplicated stye.

Do not squeeze or attempt to drain the bump at home.

When should I have an in-person eye exam?

Seek timely in-person care for worsening or spreading redness, marked eyelid swelling, fever, significant pain, vision changes, eye movement pain, or a bump that persists or recurs.

Persistent lumps may need an ophthalmology assessment.
