Seborrheic Dermatitis FAQ's

What is seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition that affects oil-rich areas including the scalp, face and chest.

This condition commonly affects the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, or ears.

What symptoms can it cause?

Symptoms include flaky or greasy scales, redness, irritation and itching. It may appear as dandruff on the scalp.

It can recur even after symptoms improve.

Is seborrheic dermatitis contagious?

No. It is not spread from person to person and is thought to involve a combination of skin inflammation and normal skin yeast.

Your provider considers the location and appearance of scaling and redness.

How is it treated?

Antifungal shampoos or creams and short-term anti-inflammatory treatments may help control flares. Your provider will select treatment based on the area affected.

Maintenance care may help control future flares.

Does it go away permanently?

It often recurs, but many patients achieve good control with a maintenance routine and treatment during flare-ups. Unusual or persistent cases may need in-person assessment.

If the rash is severe or atypical, other causes should be considered.

Call NP Healthcare Group or book a virtual appointment online to discuss your symptoms and next steps. Same-day appointments may be available.
