Rosacea FAQ's
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that most often affects the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. It may cause ongoing redness, flushing, visible tiny blood vessels, and inflamed bumps. Symptoms often come and go, and some patients experience burning or stinging skin.
What causes rosacea and what triggers flare-ups?
The exact cause is not completely understood. Genetics, immune responses, and environmental factors may contribute. Common triggers include sun exposure, heat, hot drinks, alcohol, spicy foods, emotional stress, and some skin-care products. Triggers vary between patients, so tracking personal patterns can help.
Can rosacea be diagnosed through telehealth?
During a secure video appointment, your provider reviews your symptoms, medical history, prior treatments, and potential triggers. Clear photographs in good lighting can help evaluate the redness and bumps. Because acne, dermatitis, and other conditions can resemble rosacea, an in-person examination may be recommended if the diagnosis is unclear.
How is rosacea treated?
Treatment may include gentle skin care, daily sun protection, avoiding individual triggers, and prescription topical treatments such as metronidazole, azelaic acid, or ivermectin when appropriate. Some patients benefit from oral medications such as doxycycline. Persistent visible blood vessels or pronounced redness may require in-person dermatology procedures.
When does rosacea require in-person care?
Eye irritation, gritty sensations, red eyelids, or light sensitivity can occur with ocular rosacea and deserve prompt assessment. Seek urgent in-person eye care for significant pain, vision changes, or marked light sensitivity. Severe, rapidly worsening, or treatment-resistant symptoms may also require a dermatologist.
