Tinea Corporis (Ringworm) FAQ's

What is ringworm?

Tinea corporis is a fungal infection of the skin; despite its name, it is not caused by a worm.

Ringworm is caused by a fungus, not a worm.

What does ringworm look like?

It often creates a circular or ring-shaped patch with a scaly, raised edge and central clearing, but not all cases have a classic ring appearance.

Other rashes can resemble ringworm, especially after steroid use.

How does ringworm spread?

It can spread through skin contact with people or animals, shared objects and contaminated surfaces.

The appearance of the border and spread of the rash can guide assessment.

How is it treated?

Localized cases are often treated with topical antifungal medication. Widespread, persistent or hair-bearing-area infections may need testing or oral treatment.

Steroid creams alone may worsen an undiagnosed fungal infection.

Should I use a steroid cream?

Avoid using a steroid alone on a rash that may be ringworm, because it can mask or worsen the fungal infection. Seek reassessment if the rash does not improve.

Extensive or persistent lesions may require testing or oral medication.
