Rashes FAQ's

What causes a rash?

A rash describes an area of skin that changes in color, texture, or appearance. It may remain in one place, cover a larger area, or spread over time.

Common causes of rashes include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Contact with irritating substances
  • Viral or bacterial infections
  • Fungal infections
  • Insect bites
  • Heat and sweating
  • Medication reactions
  • Chronic conditions like eczema or psoriasis

The rash’s appearance offers useful clues, but it doesn’t always reveal the cause. Your other symptoms, recent activities, medications, and possible exposures also help your NP Healthcare Group provider reach a diagnosis.

What symptoms can occur with a rash?

A rash may produce flat or raised patches, small bumps, blisters, scaling, cracking, or changes in skin color. Depending on the cause, the affected skin may itch, burn, sting, or feel painful.

Tell your provider if the rash appeared after starting a medication, using a new skin product, eating a particular food, spending time outdoors, or coming into contact with someone who has an infection.

Can a virtual provider evaluate my rash?

Many rashes are suitable for an initial virtual assessment. During your secure video appointment, your NP Healthcare Group provider examines the affected skin and asks how the rash began and changed.

Good lighting and a clear camera image help your provider see the rash. They may also ask you to upload close-up photographs. Include an image of the entire affected area and another showing the rash’s texture and individual spots.

Some rashes require laboratory testing, a skin sample, or an in-person examination. If virtual care can’t provide enough information, the team refers you to an appropriate in-person provider or specialist.

How are rashes treated?

Treatment will depend on the rash’s underlying cause and how badly it’s affecting you. Your personalized care plan may include:

  • Prescription or over-the-counter antihistamines
  • Corticosteroid creams
  • Antifungal medication
  • Antibiotic treatment
  • Moisturizers or barrier creams
  • Guidance on avoiding triggers and irritants

Avoid scratching the rash, as broken skin may allow an infection to develop. Seek emergency care for a rash accompanied by trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, faintness, or other signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Blistering, peeling skin, severe pain, rapid spreading, purple spots, eye or mouth involvement, or a high fever also require prompt in-person assessment.

If you develop a new or persistent rash, contact NP Healthcare Group to arrange a same-day virtual assessment. Call or book an appointment online today.
