Psoriasis FAQ's

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory condition that can cause thickened, scaly plaques and sometimes nail changes or joint disease.

Psoriasis is immune-mediated and is not contagious.

Is psoriasis contagious?

No. Psoriasis is not an infection and cannot be passed by touching another person.

Some patients develop joint pain or stiffness that needs assessment.

Can psoriasis be diagnosed through photos?

Many typical plaques can be assessed using history and clear photographs, but uncertain or atypical lesions may require an in-person skin examination.

A provider may review the location, extent, and appearance of plaques using photos.

What treatments are available?

Depending on severity and location, therapy may include moisturizers, topical corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs or referral for phototherapy or systemic treatment.

Treatment depends on severity and may require specialist care for widespread disease.

When should I seek urgent evaluation?

New joint swelling or prolonged stiffness warrants assessment for psoriatic arthritis. Widespread redness, fever, significant pain or rapidly worsening psoriasis requires urgent in-person care.

New significant joint symptoms or extensive skin involvement warrants further evaluation.
