Nausea and Vomiting FAQ's

What can cause nausea and vomiting?

Common causes include infections, food-related illness, medications, migraines, pregnancy and digestive disorders. Occasionally symptoms are related to more serious abdominal or neurologic conditions.

Potential causes range from short-lived infections to medication effects or more serious illnesses.

How is nausea assessed through telehealth?

Your provider reviews the duration, frequency, associated symptoms, fluid intake, medication use and pregnancy possibility when applicable, then determines whether testing or in-person assessment is needed.

Inability to keep liquids down increases the risk of dehydration.

How can I prevent dehydration?

Take frequent small sips of oral rehydration solution or clear fluids. Resume light foods as tolerated. Young children, older adults and people with chronic illnesses may dehydrate more quickly.

History, medication review, and associated symptoms guide whether testing is needed.

Can medication help?

An antiemetic may be appropriate depending on your history, cause of symptoms and potential medication interactions. Treatment should also address the underlying condition.

Medication may relieve symptoms, but treatment also depends on the cause.

When should I seek emergency care?

Seek urgent evaluation for inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, severe abdominal pain, blood or coffee-ground vomit, severe headache with neurologic changes, or signs of significant dehydration.

Severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit, confusion, or marked dehydration warrants urgent evaluation.
