Nail Fungus FAQ's

What is onychomycosis?

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the fingernails or toenails that may cause yellow or white discoloration, thickening, crumbling and separation from the nail bed.

Fungal nail infection may cause thickening, discoloration, and brittle nails.

Does every discolored nail have fungus?

No. Injury, psoriasis and other nail conditions can look similar. Laboratory confirmation is commonly recommended before oral antifungal treatment.

Other conditions, including trauma or psoriasis, can look similar.

Can nail fungus be treated virtually?

A provider can review nail photos and treatment history and arrange confirmatory testing or referral as appropriate. Some cases need in-person nail sampling.

Confirmation with a nail specimen may be recommended before oral treatment.

What treatment options exist?

Depending on severity, options include topical antifungals or oral medications. Oral treatment requires evaluation for drug interactions and liver-related risks.

Oral medication may require review of liver health and drug interactions.

How long does treatment take?

Toenails grow slowly, so a clear nail may take many months to replace a damaged one even after the infection has been treated.

New healthy nail growth is slow, so improvement can take months.
