Migraine Without Aura FAQ's
What is migraine without aura?
It is a recurring headache disorder often involving throbbing or pulsating pain, nausea, or sensitivity to light and sound, without preceding typical aura symptoms.
Migraine can interfere significantly with work, school, and ordinary daily activities.
How is migraine diagnosed?
Diagnosis is primarily based on headache pattern, duration, associated symptoms, health history and neurologic warning signs. Imaging is not routinely needed for a stable, typical migraine pattern.
A sudden severe headache unlike any previous headache is an emergency warning sign.
What treatments are available?
Options may include migraine-specific acute medication, other pain-relieving treatments, nausea control, and prevention strategies for frequent attacks. Medication selection depends on cardiovascular history and other contraindications.
The video evaluation focuses on headache pattern and warning signs, with examination or imaging when indicated.
Can migraines be managed virtually?
Many established, uncomplicated migraine cases can be managed through telehealth. A new or unusual headache may require neurologic examination or urgent in-person evaluation.
Frequent attacks may benefit from preventive treatment in addition to medicines used during attacks.
When is a headache an emergency?
Seek emergency care for a sudden thunderclap headache, new weakness, difficulty speaking, confusion, fever with a stiff neck, new headache after head injury, or major change in headache pattern.
New neurologic symptoms, weakness, confusion, or abrupt thunderclap headache warrants emergency assessment.
