Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) FAQ's

What is hypertension?

Hypertension is blood pressure that remains higher than recommended over time. Diagnosis is based on appropriately obtained measurements, often confirmed by readings taken on more than one occasion or at home.

Keeping a log of home readings helps identify persistent elevations.

What symptoms does high blood pressure cause?

Most people have no symptoms, even when their readings are elevated. Headaches or dizziness are nonspecific and do not reliably indicate blood pressure severity.

You should not rely on how you feel to determine whether your blood pressure is controlled.

Can hypertension be managed by telehealth?

Yes, many patients can be assessed and followed remotely using a validated upper-arm blood pressure monitor and a home reading log. Your provider may also order blood tests and recommend an in-person examination when needed.

Use the correct cuff size, sit quietly for five minutes, and record readings at consistent times.

What treatments are available?

Treatment can include lower sodium intake, exercise, weight management, limiting alcohol, and prescription medications tailored to your clinical history. Follow-up helps adjust therapy safely.

Medication changes require review of blood pressure trends, side effects, and sometimes kidney function or potassium.

When is high blood pressure an emergency?

If blood pressure is 180/120 mm Hg or higher, repeat the reading after a minute and seek immediate medical guidance. Call emergency services for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, new neurologic symptoms, confusion, or other signs of acute organ injury.

A very high reading without symptoms still warrants prompt clinical assessment; do not wait for a routine appointment.

Call NP Healthcare Group or book a virtual appointment online to discuss your symptoms and next steps. Same-day appointments may be available.
