Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol) FAQ's

What is hyperlipidemia?

Hyperlipidemia means elevated levels of cholesterol or other fats in the blood. High LDL cholesterol contributes to plaque formation inside arteries, while elevated triglycerides can also affect cardiovascular health.

Family history, smoking, diabetes, and age also influence individual risk.

Does high cholesterol cause symptoms?

Usually not. A lipid panel is generally needed to detect abnormal cholesterol levels. Significant elevations may be associated with inherited conditions, and very high triglyceride levels can increase pancreatitis risk.

A normal appearance does not rule out elevated cholesterol.

How is high cholesterol evaluated through telehealth?

Your provider reviews your lipid results, health history, family history, blood pressure, diabetes and smoking status, and current medications. Additional testing may be ordered to assess cardiovascular risk or secondary causes.

Results can be discussed over video and shared through the patient portal.

How is hyperlipidemia treated?

Treatment may include nutrition changes, physical activity, weight management, and cholesterol-lowering medication such as a statin when indicated. Decisions depend on overall risk, not cholesterol numbers alone.

Your plan may also address blood pressure, diabetes, and other cardiovascular risks.

How often should cholesterol be checked?

Testing intervals depend on age, risk factors, baseline results and treatment. Your provider will recommend follow-up labs and visits to assess your response and medication tolerance.

Patients beginning or changing medication may need repeat testing sooner than those whose levels are stable.
