Hair Loss Treatment FAQ's

What causes hair loss?

Hair follicles naturally go through phases of growth, rest, and shedding. Hair loss develops when something disrupts this cycle or gradually changes the follicles.

Common causes include:

  • Male or female pattern hair loss
  • Hormonal changes
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Physical or emotional stress
  • Illness or surgery
  • Certain medications
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Scalp inflammation or infection
  • Tight hairstyles or damaging hair treatments

Genetic pattern hair loss typically results in gradual thinning. Men may notice a receding hairline or thinning at the crown, while women often develop widening along the part and reduced density across the top of the scalp.

How does a virtual hair loss assessment work?

Your NP Healthcare Group provider asks when you first noticed the hair loss, whether it began suddenly or gradually, and which areas it affects. They also review your health, family history, medications, diet, stress levels, and any recent illnesses.

Clear photographs and a secure video examination help your provider assess the pattern of hair loss and look for visible scalp changes. They may order blood tests to check for thyroid disease, iron deficiency, hormonal changes, or other medical causes.

Some types of hair loss require close examination, a scalp biopsy, or specialist testing. Your provider can arrange an in-person dermatology referral when necessary.

What medical treatments are available?

Treatment for hair loss varies based on its cause, your overall health, and how it occurs. For pattern hair loss, your NP Healthcare Group provider may recommend topical minoxidil or prescription medication like finasteride when clinically appropriate.

Some medications don’t suit people who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or have particular health conditions. Your provider explains the possible benefits, side effects, and monitoring requirements before prescribing treatment.

Medical treatment works gradually because hair grows slowly. You may need several months of consistent use before noticing a meaningful difference. Ongoing appointments allow your provider to monitor your response and adjust your care plan.

NP Healthcare Group provides medical hair loss care through virtual appointments, so the practice doesn’t provide laser therapy or other in-office procedures.

When should I seek help for hair loss?

Arrange an assessment if you notice progressive thinning, excessive shedding, a receding hairline, or bald areas. Arrange a prompt evaluation if hair loss begins suddenly or accompanies scalp pain, redness, scaling, or scarring.
