Fatigue FAQ's

What causes ongoing fatigue?

Possible causes include inadequate or poor-quality sleep, mood disorders, anemia, thyroid disease, chronic illness, medication effects, nutritional deficiencies and sleep apnea.

Fatigue is a symptom rather than a diagnosis and may have several overlapping causes.

How is fatigue evaluated?

Your provider asks when fatigue began, how it affects you, and whether you have sleep, mood, weight, medication or other symptoms. Testing is guided by the history rather than ordering every test automatically.

Persistent or worsening symptoms deserve evaluation, especially when associated with other changes.

Which tests might be ordered?

Depending on your symptoms, tests may include a CBC, metabolic panel, thyroid function and targeted iron or other studies. Sleep evaluation or an in-person examination may be recommended.

Depending on your history, your provider may recommend blood tests or sleep-related evaluation.

Can lifestyle changes help?

Regular sleep schedules, adequate nutrition, physical activity matched to your abilities and addressing stress can be helpful. Treatment should also target any specific underlying medical issue.

Treatment focuses on the identified cause rather than a single medication for fatigue.

When is fatigue a warning sign?

Seek prompt medical attention if fatigue is accompanied by chest pain, significant shortness of breath, fainting, new confusion, severe weakness or unexplained serious symptoms.

New chest pain, fainting, severe weakness, or difficulty breathing requires prompt care.
