Diarrhea FAQ's

What causes diarrhea?

Common causes include viral or foodborne infections, medications, dietary intolerance and chronic digestive disorders. Recent antibiotic use or travel may affect the evaluation.

Most short episodes resolve, but frequency, duration and associated symptoms matter.

How long does acute diarrhea last?

Many mild infectious cases improve within a few days. Diarrhea that persists, recurs or is associated with systemic symptoms warrants further evaluation.

Blood in stool, high fever, or significant abdominal pain needs prompt evaluation.

What should I eat or drink?

Oral rehydration solution is helpful when fluid losses are significant. Continue fluids and eat simple foods as tolerated; avoid foods that noticeably worsen symptoms.

Recent antibiotics, travel, and food exposures can guide testing decisions.

Should I take an anti-diarrheal medication?

Certain over-the-counter treatments can help some adults, but they may be inappropriate with fever, bloody diarrhea or suspected inflammatory or invasive infection. Your provider can advise.

Hydration is especially important; anti-diarrheal medicines are not appropriate in every case.

When do I need in-person care?

Seek prompt care for blood in stools, severe abdominal pain, high fever, dehydration, symptoms after recent antibiotics, or persistent diarrhea. Severe weakness, confusion or fainting requires urgent evaluation.

Persistent diarrhea may require stool testing or a gastroenterology referral.
