Diabetes FAQ's
What is diabetes, and how does it develop?
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that develops when your body isn’t able to properly convert food into energy. Every time you eat, your body converts a portion of that food into glucose, a type of sugar.
Next, your body releases a hormone called insulin, which works to “unlock” your cells so they can access the glucose and other nutrients needed to thrive. Without enough insulin or the ability to make use of that insulin, your cells can’t function properly, and glucose builds up in your bloodstream.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that some people are born with. Type 2 diabetes is often associated with unhealthy lifestyle choices, but there can also be a genetic component. Women can develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy, increasing their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
Why is it so important to treat diabetes?
Because each cell in your body needs glucose and other nutrients to work properly, it’s no surprise that diabetes can cause problems throughout the body. Some of the problems that can develop in people with diabetes include:
- Skin issues
- Vision loss
- Kidney failure
- Erectile dysfunction
- Nerve damage
- Urinary incontinence
- High blood pressure
- Circulation issues that can lead to amputation
While not every case of diabetes can be prevented, everyone who develops this disease can benefit from professional chronic disease management to reduce the risk of the serious issues mentioned above.
What role do lifestyle modifications play in managing diabetes?
There are many different ways to manage diabetes, including a range of medications that alter the way your metabolism functions. For some, supplemental insulin is a lifesaving treatment for diabetes.
But you can also go a long way toward managing diabetes through lifestyle modifications. There’s a distinct connection between being overweight or obese and having a high risk of diabetes. For many people, moving closer to a healthy weight is a great way to manage diabetes.
When you entrust NP Healthcare Group with your care, you receive guidance and support on all available treatment options. Lifestyle changes are always part of the discussion, and the team is here to provide advice and help along the way.
