Cough FAQ's

What causes a cough?

Coughing is your body’s way of forcefully expelling mucus, germs, or irritants out of your airways. It’s a reflexive action that pushes air out of your throat and mouth, and you can sometimes be caught off guard when you have to cough.

Many different things that can cause a cough. Some examples include:

  • Pollen, pet dander, or other allergens
  • Common cold
  • Flu
  • Bronchitis
  • Asthma
  • Acid reflux
  • Irritants like chemicals, smoke, or strong scents
  • Pneumonia
  • COVID-19

A cough can be dry, wet (from mucus), barky, rough, or even end with a whooping sound. Your cough can develop gradually and resolve over a few days or weeks, or it can linger for months at a time.

When is the right time to seek treatment for a cough?

Coughing is part of human existence, and it serves the important purpose of clearing irritants and potentially harmful substances from your airways. You can cough just once, or experience a cough that seems like it’ll never go away.

If your cough is accompanied by other symptoms, like fever, body aches, or shortness of breath, reach out to a health professional for a diagnostic work-up. The same goes for coughing that’s painful or produces even the slightest tinge of blood.

There’s no need to suffer with a cough when help is readily available.

Are telehealth visits a good fit for diagnosing and treating a cough?

A telehealth visit can get you moving toward a treatment path that’ll ease your coughing. During your appointment, you’ll discuss how your cough feels and when it occurs to give your provider more insight into what might be causing the issue.

In some cases, you may need testing to find out more about what could be causing your cough. But it’s often possible to treat a cough without any form of lab testing. Your practitioner will explain some at-home and over-the-counter remedies that can help.

More importantly, you’ll learn what to look for that could signal that a cough is a sign of a more serious health matter, and how to respond.
