Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) FAQ's

What causes pink eye?

Conjunctivitis can result from viruses, bacteria, allergies or irritation. Different causes may look similar, and treatment depends on the likely diagnosis.

Several conditions can look similar, including more serious problems affecting the cornea.

Is conjunctivitis contagious?

Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis can spread through contact with infected eye secretions. Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious.

Eye pain, light sensitivity, or decreased vision are not typical of uncomplicated pink eye.

Does every case require antibiotic drops?

No. Antibiotics do not treat viral or allergic conjunctivitis and may not be necessary for mild bacterial cases. Artificial tears, cool compresses or allergy medication may be more appropriate.

A video examination has limits and does not replace a slit-lamp eye examination when needed.

Can a video visit help?

A provider can review symptoms and visible eye changes by video, but an eye examination may be needed to rule out other causes.

Antibiotic drops are not necessary for every case.

When is in-person eye care necessary?

Eye pain, light sensitivity, vision changes, contact lens use with a red eye, injury or significant swelling requires prompt in-person assessment; sudden vision loss is an emergency.

Contact lens wearers with a red or painful eye should seek prompt in-person evaluation.
