Some people have mild symptoms or no recognizable sores.
How is herpes diagnosed?
A swab PCR from a new lesion is generally preferred when sores are present. Type-specific blood testing has limitations and should be considered selectively.
Testing may be needed when the diagnosis is uncertain, particularly with a first episode.
What treatments are available?
Prescription antivirals such as valacyclovir may shorten outbreaks and, when taken suppressively, reduce recurrences and transmission risk; they do not eradicate the virus.
Antiviral medication can shorten episodes and sometimes reduce recurrence or transmission risk.
When is in-person or urgent evaluation needed?
Eye pain or redness with possible HSV, trouble urinating, severe or widespread lesions, neurologic symptoms or infection during pregnancy requires prompt clinical attention. Suspected HSV involving the eye needs urgent ophthalmic assessment.
Eye involvement, severe illness, or symptoms during pregnancy requires prompt in-person assessment.
