Cold and Flu FAQ's

What is the difference between colds and the flu?

Both the common cold and influenza, or the flu, are contagious respiratory illnesses caused by specific viruses. A group of viruses called influenza viruses causes the flu, while many different viral infections can bring on a common cold.

Colds can also be brought on by seasonal coronaviruses, which are different from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 infections.

It isn’t always easy to know whether you have a cold, the flu, or even COVID-19. That’s because all of these illnesses share many of the same symptoms.

What are some signs I might have a cold or the flu?

In general, the symptoms brought on by a cold are less intense than those brought on by the flu or COVID-19. Here are some things you might notice with a common cold:

  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Mild body aches

With the flu, you might not have the same issues with a runny or stuffy nose, but you could experience:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headaches
  • Chest coughing
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Vomiting or diarrhea

COVID-19 can exhibit any of the symptoms mentioned above and also include changes in your ability to taste or smell and shortness of breath.

How can a telehealth visit help me manage cold and flu symptoms?

You might be surprised at just how much can be addressed through a telehealth appointment. The team at NP Healthcare Group begins by discussing your current set of symptoms, as well as your overall health history.

If you need viral testing, your practitioner can point you toward the right resource. In many cases, however, cold and flu symptoms can be managed without the need for testing. Your provider will discuss the best options to help you feel better and also advise you on what to look out for in the event your cold or flu worsens.

It’s important to have a healthcare provider monitor you in the event of severe cold and flu symptoms. In some cases, issues like pneumonia or bacterial infections can develop. Antiviral medications can be a good treatment option in some cases.

Booking a visit with NP Healthcare Group is as easy as a simple phone call or a few moments on the online booking page.
