Tinea Pedis (Athlete’s Foot) FAQ's
What is athlete’s foot?
Tinea pedis is a fungal infection affecting the feet, often between the toes or along the soles.
The infection thrives in warm, damp environments and can spread between toes.
What symptoms are common?
Common symptoms include itching, scaling, cracked skin, redness and sometimes small blisters.
Cracked skin may allow bacteria to enter.
Can it spread to other areas?
Yes. It can spread through shared wet surfaces and may extend to the toenails or other body areas.
Your provider may request close-up photos of affected areas.
How is athlete’s foot treated?
Topical antifungal creams, keeping feet dry, changing socks and cleaning footwear are common first steps. Persistent or extensive infection may need further evaluation.
Keeping feet dry and treating footwear or other sources of reinfection can help.
When should I seek in-person treatment?
Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, significant pain, or foot infection risk related to diabetes, poor circulation or immunosuppression.
Diabetes, poor circulation, or signs of bacterial infection can warrant in-person evaluation.
