Anemia FAQ's

What is anemia?

Anemia is a lower-than-expected hemoglobin level or reduced red blood cell capacity to carry oxygen. Causes include iron deficiency, blood loss, vitamin deficiencies, kidney disease, inflammation and other blood disorders.

Identifying the underlying cause is essential because treatment differs by type.

What symptoms should I watch for?

Common symptoms include tiredness, reduced exercise tolerance, dizziness, paleness and shortness of breath. Symptoms vary with the severity and speed of onset.

Severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or ongoing heavy bleeding requires urgent evaluation.

How is anemia diagnosed?

A complete blood count is commonly the first test. Your provider may also order ferritin, iron studies, vitamin B12, folate, reticulocyte count or other studies based on your history.

Your provider may review a complete blood count, iron studies, and additional testing as appropriate.

Can anemia be treated with iron?

Iron helps when iron deficiency is present, but not all anemia is caused by low iron. Correct treatment depends on finding the underlying cause; unexplained blood loss may need additional evaluation.

Iron should not automatically be started unless iron deficiency is likely or confirmed.

When does anemia require urgent attention?

Seek immediate care for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, signs of active bleeding, or profound weakness. Severe or rapidly worsening anemia may require hospital-level treatment.

Persistent or severe anemia may require hematology or other in-person care.
