Allergic Rhinitis (Seasonal Allergies) FAQ's

What is allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the nasal lining triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold or animal dander.

Symptoms can be seasonal or occur year-round depending on the trigger.

How can I tell allergies from a cold?

Itching, repeated sneezing and watery nasal drainage suggest allergies, particularly when symptoms recur with exposure. Fever and body aches are more suggestive of infection, although symptoms can overlap.

Fever or significant facial pain may suggest another diagnosis.

How is allergic rhinitis treated?

Treatment may include saline rinses, nasal corticosteroid sprays, nonsedating antihistamines and allergen reduction. Your provider selects options based on symptoms and other health conditions.

Your provider reviews symptom patterns and possible exposures.

Can I be treated through a video visit?

Many uncomplicated cases can be assessed virtually based on symptoms, seasonality and exposure history. Persistent symptoms or diagnostic uncertainty may require allergy testing or in-person evaluation.

Correct technique matters when using nasal sprays; relief may take several days.

When should I seek urgent care?

Difficulty breathing, significant wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, or a rapidly progressing allergic reaction needs emergency evaluation.

Persistent symptoms, recurrent sinus problems, or breathing difficulties may require further evaluation.
