Acne Vulgaris FAQ's

What causes acne?

Acne develops when hair follicles become clogged with oil and skin cells, with inflammation and skin bacteria contributing to some lesions.

Acne can include clogged pores, inflamed bumps, pustules, and sometimes painful deeper lesions.

What kinds of acne can be treated virtually?

Mild to moderate blackheads, whiteheads and inflammatory pimples can often be assessed through video and photographs. Nodules, cysts or scarring may require dermatology referral.

Picking or squeezing lesions raises the risk of discoloration and scarring.

What treatments are available?

Options may include benzoyl peroxide, topical retinoids, topical antibiotics used with benzoyl peroxide, or selected oral medications when appropriate.

A provider can assess acne pattern and severity using clear photographs.

How long does acne treatment take to work?

Many treatments take six to twelve weeks for noticeable improvement. Consistent use and follow-up are important, and temporary dryness or irritation may occur.

Treatments usually take several weeks to show meaningful benefit and may need adjustment.

When should I see a dermatologist in person?

Seek specialty assessment for severe nodules, significant scarring, rapidly worsening acne, atypical lesions or acne that fails initial treatment.

Scarring, nodules, or resistant acne may warrant in-person dermatology consultation.

Call NP Healthcare Group or book a virtual appointment online to discuss your symptoms and next steps. Same-day appointments may be available.
