Acne FAQ's
What are the different types of acne?
When hair follicles become clogged, whether with oil or dead skin cells, the resulting irritation shows up as acne.
Common types include:
- Whiteheads and blackheads
- Whiteheads and blackheads are non-inflammatory forms of acne. Whiteheads occur when a clogged pore stays closed, while blackheads develop if your open pore with trapped material inside it reacts with air.
- Papules and pustules
- Papules and pustules are inflammatory acne. Papules are small, red, raised bumps, while pustules are similar but contain visible pus.
- Nodules and cysts
More severe acne can include nodules and cysts, which form deeper within your skin and may be painful. These forms of acne have a greater risk of causing permanent scars and may require prescription treatment.
Can medical care make a real difference in my acne?
Absolutely. Acne care is skincare, and skin is a major organ that can benefit from medical care.
Acne isn’t simply a cosmetic concern, and NP Healthcare Group helps you find treatments that can improve existing acne, reduce the frequency and severity of your future breakouts, and prevent complications such as scarring.
Your provider can consider factors such as:
- Your age, skin type, and acne severity
- Where breakouts occur
- Previous treatments
- Medications
- Other health conditions
For some types of acne, over-the-counter products may be enough. You may also benefit from prescription medications or a combination of treatments.
It’s also important to give acne treatments time to work. Using too many products or frequently changing your routine can irritate your skin and make symptoms worse.
How is acne treated through virtual primary care?
A packed schedule can make it hard to take care of yourself, but with virtual visits, you can discuss breakouts and treatment options without traveling to see a nurse.
During a telehealth appointment, your provider asks about your symptoms, medical history, current skincare routine, and previous acne treatments. In addition, clear photos of your skin can assist with your evaluation.
Your personalized treatment plan may include recommendations for gentle skincare and over-the-counter acne products, as well as prescription medications when appropriate. Your provider can explain how to use your treatment, discuss potential side effects, and arrange follow-up care to monitor your progress.
